Former MLA Bhanudas Murkute Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault

In a significant legal development, former Maharashtra MLA Bhanudas Murkute has been arrested in Ahilyanagar district, following allegations of repeated sexual assault against a woman since 2019, authorities revealed.

Murkute, aged 83, was detained by Rahuri police when he returned to Ahilyanagar from Mumbai. The arrest followed a complaint lodged by a woman accusing him of multiple sexual assaults over several years, prompting a case under IPC sections for aggravated rape, causing harm with intent, and cheating.

The veteran politician, earlier aligned with Congress and Janata Dal, was taken into custody from Shrirampur and appeared before a local court, which granted a two-day police custody. He has a history of representing Shrirampur in the state assembly thrice.
