MI5 Chief Warns of Rising Threats from Russia, Iran, and Terrorism
Ken McCallum, head of MI5, highlighted significant threats from Russia, Iran, and terrorist groups in an annual update. Russian diplomats, acting as spies, have been expelled. Iran-backed plots have increased post the death of Mahsa Amini. Concerns on cyber threats also arise from China and extremist terrorism.
In an annual briefing, MI5's Director General, Ken McCallum, outlined pressing threats from Russia, Iran, and terrorist networks facing Britain. He stressed the expulsion of Russian diplomats post the Ukraine invasion, highlighting their espionage roles.
McCallum revealed the increasing danger from Iran, referencing 20 thwarted plots since January 2022. These have escalated following Mahsa Amini's controversial death in Iranian custody. The use of criminal proxies in both Russia and Iran was noted.
The ongoing cyber threat from China and intensified terrorist threats, particularly from Islamist and extreme right-wing groups, were also discussed. Internet radicalization among youth remains a concern, alongside summertime riots incited by disinformation.
