In a significant legal development, a court has handed down a 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to Hira Lal Maurya for his involvement in drug trafficking. The Special Public Prosecutor, Anupam Shukla, confirmed the ruling by Additional District Judge Surya Prakash Singh, imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh as well.
Maurya, who hails from Balrampur district, was apprehended on January 25, 2019, at Gonda Junction railway station. Sub-inspector Suresh Sahni of the Government Railway Police seized 110 grams of Alprazolam powder from Maurya's possession, leading to his arrest under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The court's verdict stipulated that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional two years of simple imprisonment. The duration spent in jail during the trial will count toward the total sentence. Maurya was formally convicted after a thorough court review of the evidence and charges presented in the case.
