The United Kingdom is grappling with a significant rise in assassination attempts ordered by Russia and Iran, as both nations enlist criminals for nefarious tasks, Ken McCallum, director of the MI5, announced on Tuesday.
McCallum revealed that his agency, along with the police, has intercepted 20 Tehran-supported plots since 2022. He cautioned that Iran might amplify its aggressions in the UK should Israel retaliate against Iran's missile attacks. Highlighting the dangers posed by Middle East conflicts, the MI5 chief noted the potential for increased Iranian state hostility domestically. Furthermore, he underscored threats from Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis in Yemen.
Despite the ongoing Middle East crisis, large-scale terrorist violence has not yet emerged in Britain. Yet, the threat landscape, complicated by state actors and a resurging Islamic State, is particularly intricate. State-threat inquiries have surged 48% over the past year, with Russia, Iran, and China as primary instigators. McCallum pointed to Russia's military intelligence-directed efforts in arson and sabotage as mechanisms to incite chaos in the UK and Europe.
