The UK is bolstering its humanitarian support for Lebanon with an extra GBP 10 million in 'lifesaving aid' as conflict in the region intensifies, causing mass displacement and civilian casualties.
Amid heightened unrest, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is advising British nationals to exit Lebanon quickly, urging a ceasefire between Lebanese Hezbollah and Israel to curb the crisis. The aid will be distributed via long-standing humanitarian organizations in Lebanon tackling critical shortages in shelter, water, hygiene, and healthcare.
Anneliese Dodds, UK Minister of State for Development and Minister of State for Women and Equalities, emphasized that while the aid is crucial, a ceasefire remains essential for a lasting resolution to the humanitarian plight.
This announcement follows GBP 5 million in aid provided through UNICEF and a GBP 7.6 million contribution from the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). The UK continues facilitating the evacuation of British nationals from Lebanon, deploying troops and officials to Cyprus for planning and increasing capacity on commercial flights.
Lebanon faces a dire situation with over 1.2 million displaced and nearly 2,000 killed in the ongoing conflict, as Israeli attacks escalate in retaliation against Hezbollah.
