Wayanad Landslide Fallout: Kerala Seeks Urgent Relief

The Kerala High Court has urged the Centre and NDMA to provide relief for the Wayanad landslides disaster. With over 200 lives claimed, Kerala seeks clarity on relief fund criteria and response from the Centre. A significant loss of property demands urgent actions from government bodies.

The Kerala High Court has taken a strong stance, urging the Centre and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to expedite efforts towards providing relief funds for those affected by the devastating Wayanad landslides, which occurred on July 30.

While presiding over a hearing concerning the calamity that claimed over 200 lives and left numerous others missing, the high court requested the state government to outline the criteria used in estimating the disaster relief requirements. Additionally, the court has asked for a response from the Centre regarding its position on disbursing relief funds to the affected state.

The court emphasized that the Additional Solicitor General must submit a report within two weeks. This came after the amicus curiae informed the court that the union government has yet to provide any assistance pertaining to the Wayanad disaster. The tragedy severely impacted areas including Punchirimmattam, Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Attamala, amassing losses exceeding Rs 1,200 crore, as stated by the government.
