In a tragic turn of events in South Kolkata's Bansdroni area, two individuals were taken into custody in connection with the death of a young boy, struck by an excavator. The boy, identified as a class 9 student, was en route to tuition when the accident occurred near Dinesh Nagar auto stand.
Following the incident on Wednesday, angry locals reacted by vandalizing the excavator, with the driver fleeing the scene. Senior police officer Bidisha Kalita confirmed the arrests, identifying one suspect as the driver and the other as the owner who aided in hiding the driver. Several FIRs have been filed under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Protests erupted, accusing poor road conditions and a delayed police response as factors in the tragedy. Allegations flew regarding political involvement, and tensions further escalated following confrontations between police, protesters, and accusations against Trinamool Congress members.
