Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made a historic visit to Bangladesh on Friday, where he met with interim leader Muhammad Yunus. This crucial meeting comes after Yunus assumed leadership in August following a tumultuous political uprising.
The visit's agenda was packed, addressing pivotal topics such as bilateral trade and investment, the plight of migrant workers, and the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis, as confirmed by officials and media reports. Anwar's arrival was marked by a ceremonial welcome, including gun salutes and a red carpet reception at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
This is the first visit by a foreign leader to Bangladesh since Yunus took office, and notably, the first state visit by a Malaysian leader to Bangladesh in 11 years. As Malaysia prepares to chair the Association for Southeast Asian Nations next year, Bangladesh is keen to strengthen trade ties within the region and seek ASEAN's involvement in resolving the refugee crisis.
