The Supreme Court has mandated the Assam State Legal Services Authority to execute surprise inspections at the Matia transit camp for foreigners. This move is aimed at assessing the facility's hygiene standards, food quality, and overall living conditions.
A judicial bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih urged the authority's secretary to appoint suitable officers to conduct these impromptu visits, ensuring no prior notifications are given to the camp's management.
The court has scheduled a follow-up hearing on November 4, following the investigation. Concerns over inadequate water, sanitation, and food provisions prompted this action, emphasizing the need for precise verification and prompt improvements.
