The Supreme Court issued a stern warning to Gujarat authorities on Friday, highlighting potential contempt of court over recent demolition activities. This comes after allegations surfaced that the demolishing of properties defied the apex court's earlier directive.
The case was heard by Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan, who questioned whether the demolition was authorized by the court. Senior advocate Sanjay Hegde, representing petitioners, claimed the properties were wrongfully razed despite a clear court order prohibiting such actions without permission.
The solicitor general for Gujarat, Tushar Mehta, argued that exceptions were in place for structures posing public risks or built unlawfully. The matter was adjourned, with further proceedings set for October 16, where Gujarat must present a comprehensive response.
