The Gauhati High Court has taken a firm stance against illegal lotteries by directing the Assam government to halt the issuance of permissions for such activities. This decision follows a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Rupam Borborah, which raised concerns about the rampant organization of unauthorized lotteries.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice N Unni Krishnan Nair instructed the government to issue the necessary orders to all deputy commissioners and superintendents of police across the state within one week. They emphasized immediate action against those found to be conducting these lotteries illegally.
The court also required the state to file an affidavit responding to the PIL within six weeks, highlighting how they plan to tackle the issue. The move comes amid reports that some districts have granted permissions without proper authority, potentially misleading the public.
