The United Kingdom has decided to transfer sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, with an agreement that secures the strategically significant UK-U.S. military base at Diego Garcia.
Announced on Thursday, the British government emphasized the strong support from international partners, notably the United States, for this deal.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy remarked, "Today's agreement ensures the future of this vital military base, enhances our global security role, and maintains our alliance with Mauritius, an important Commonwealth ally."
