Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has critiqued the central government for failing to provide specific financial aid for relief efforts following the Wayanad landslides. Over 200 lives were lost, and despite promises of assistance, the state has not received any special funds to date.
Vijayan revealed the state had requested Rs 219.2 crore for urgent aid beyond the SDRF allocation. While the Centre disbursed Rs 145.6 crore as part of its share in the SDRF, it was noted as routine procedure rather than exceptional disaster relief.
To aid families, particularly those where children lost parents, the cabinet pledged monetary compensation and announced plans for a model township for survivors’ rehabilitation. Legal proceedings to secure lands have been expedited under the Disaster Management Act.
