Starmer Repays Thousands in Donor Gifts Amid Criticism
Britain's Keir Starmer has repaid over 6,000 pounds in gifts from wealthy donors following criticism. The decision comes ahead of a proposed new code for donations. Starmer announced he would no longer accept such gifts, aligning with Deputy PM Angela Rayner and Finance Minister Rachel Reeves.
Britain's Keir Starmer has announced the repayment of over 6,000 pounds worth of gifts from wealthy donors, his office confirmed on Wednesday. The move follows criticism over freebies received by the prime minister and other Labour politicians.
Just months after Starmer and his Labour Party ascended to power, he and his top ministers have faced scrutiny for accepting donations to cover costs of clothing, parties, concerts, and foreign travel. Starmer's Downing Street office indicated that the repayments are meant to preempt the publication of a proposed new code governing such donations.
'We are now going to establish clear principles for donations, as politicians have until now relied on their individual judgment,' Starmer explained during a trip to Brussels. He and senior ministers Angela Rayner and Rachel Reeves have decided to stop accepting such gifts.
The repayments cover six Taylor Swift concert tickets, horse racing tickets, and a clothing rental deal with a high-end fashion designer. According to the House of Commons code of conduct, MPs must disclose financial interests that could influence their work.
Last month, Starmer pledged to cease receiving donations for his clothing. An ongoing investigation targets Labour donor and media entrepreneur Waheed Alli for alleged non-registration of interests. Alli, a frequent donor to Starmer, has provided multiple gifts, including glasses and accommodation.
