On Wednesday, G7 leaders voiced 'strong concern' over the escalating crisis in the Middle East, emphasizing that a diplomatic solution remains viable. The leaders, convened by Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, discussed the situation following Iran's missile attack on Israel, which has heightened fears of a broader regional conflict.

The Italian government issued a statement condemning Tehran's aggression and highlighting the leaders' agreement to jointly reduce regional tensions. The statement referenced U.N. resolutions 2735 and 1701, which advocate for a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages, as well as peace along the Israel-Lebanon border.

U.S. President Joe Biden also joined the discussion, coordinating a response that includes imposing new sanctions on Iran. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Meloni called on the U.N. Security Council to consider reinforcing the mandate of the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in Lebanon, to which Italy has contributed over 1,000 soldiers.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani refuted media reports suggesting Italy might withdraw its troops from the region, although he acknowledged the importance of having an evacuation plan should the situation further deteriorate.
