A delegation from the Delhi unit of the Congress, headed by its president Devender Yadav, met Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora on Tuesday to submit a memorandum highlighting the deteriorating law and order situation in the capital.

Yadav revealed that the delegation discussed significant issues including an increase in crimes against women, the prevalence of road rage, traffic congestion, and the illicit liquor and drug trades. He linked the rising crime rates to high youth unemployment. According to NCRB data, Delhi reports the highest crime rate in India, with 1,832 crimes per one lakh population, far exceeding the national average of 544.

The alarming data from Delhi Police indicates 308 murders, 1,034 robberies, 144 extortions, and six kidnappings for ransom by mid-August. The delegation emphasized that these figures indicate a total breakdown of law and order, making Delhi the most unsafe city for women, accounting for over 29% of crimes against women in India. The city has reported 1,393 rapes, 1,354 sexual assaults, 4,316 snatchings, 5,735 burglaries, and 12,698 house thefts in 2024 to date.
