At least 10 Vietnamese fishermen sustained injuries after their boat was assaulted by two foreign vessels near the Paracel Islands—a region claimed by both China and Vietnam—state media reported.

The incident occurred on Sunday, as per Thanh Nien newspaper, quoting authorities in Quang Ngai province. The attackers, numbering around 40, reportedly beat the fishermen with iron pipes and confiscated their fishing gear, Tien Phong newspaper disclosed.

Reports did not offer a description of the attacking vessels or their crew. Three of the injured fishermen suffered broken arms and legs, according to Nguyen Thanh Bien, the captain of the fishing boat QNg 957.39 TS. The fishing boat had departed on September 13. China's foreign ministry stated that Vietnamese boats had been fishing illegally in the area and that their actions were professional and restrained. The Vietnamese government is yet to comment.
