The Bombay High Court on Tuesday upheld the death penalty imposed on Sunil Kuchkoravi for murdering and allegedly cannibalizing his mother, a crime that has deeply unsettled society.

A division bench comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan ruled that the ''brutal and barbaric'' act, committed in 2017, leaves no room for Kuchkoravi's reformation.

Describing the case as belonging to the rarest of the rare categories, the bench noted the extreme cruelty involved in the murder, which included removing and cooking his mother's body parts, thus reaffirming the necessity of the death penalty.
