An armed miscreant on Tuesday looted ₹40 lakh cash from an Axis Bank branch in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police reported.

'A masked man entered my cabin, took me at gunpoint, and demanded ₹40 lakh in cash. He threatened to kill me if I failed to comply,' said Naveen Jain, Axis Bank Manager. Jain then instructed his cashier, Rohit, to hand over the cash.

After receiving the money, the accused fled the scene on his bike, the manager added. The suspect reportedly threatened to kill the manager or commit suicide had the demand not been met, citing the need to repay a loan, Jain conveyed to the police. Superintendent of Police, Ram Sewvak Gautam, stated that the investigation is ongoing, with CCTV footage collected and bank staff being interrogated.
