The Indian contingent in the United Nations Interim Force in South Lebanon (UNIFIL) will remain stationed despite escalating tensions following Israel's decision to enter the region.
A UNIFIL source confirmed that the Indian battalion, consisting of over 900 personnel, is secure and holding its position.
In a targeted incursion, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have aimed at Hezbollah positions threatening nearby Israeli towns. The operation involves both ground troops and air and artillery support, with a goal of pushing Hezbollah north in alignment with UNSC resolution 1701.
UNIFIL, notified in advance by the IDF, confirmed the peacekeepers would maintain their positions while urging all parties to de-escalate the situation.
The UN mission has about 10,500 peacekeepers from 50 countries, including India, with 17% of activities conducted jointly with the Lebanese Armed Forces. Established by UN Security Council resolutions in 1978, UNIFIL aims to maintain peace and security in southern Lebanon.
