The Bombay High Court on Tuesday upheld the death penalty awarded to Sunil Kuchkoravi by a Kolhapur court for the murder and alleged cannibalism of his mother in 2017.

A division bench consisting of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan affirmed the sentence, emphasizing that the crime fell under the 'rarest of rare' category with no possibility of reformation.

The prosecution details that Kuchkoravi, who killed his 63-year-old mother Yallama Rama Kuchkoravi over a dispute regarding money for liquor, had subsequently chopped her body and cooked some of her organs. Kuchkoravi was sentenced to death in 2021, a decision he unsuccessfully appealed against.
