Award-winning journalist Mech Dara has been arrested by Cambodian military police, leading to international outcry over press freedom in the country. Dara, known for his reporting on corruption, trafficking, and scam operations, was detained on Monday.
The military police, while confirming the arrest, have not specified the charges against Dara. Spokesperson Eng Hy stated that the arrest was made following a court warrant but did not disclose Dara's location. Human rights group Licadho reported that Dara was detained at a highway toll booth between Koh Kong and Sihanouk provinces.
The U.S. State Department has expressed concern over Dara's arrest. Southeast Asia has become a hub for global fraudulent schemes, often run from fortified compounds staffed by trafficked workers. The arrest underscores Cambodia's declining press freedoms, which have deteriorated as authorities have shut down independent media.
