The Supreme Court commenced hearings on Tuesday on a series of pleas alleging that properties, including those of accused criminals, were being unlawfully demolished in several states.
A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan, on September 17, mandated a halt on demolitions, including those involving accused individuals, until October 1, unless permitted by the court.
The judiciary underscored that even a single instance of illegal demolition contradicts the ethos of the Constitution, although its directive does not apply to unauthorized structures in public places or demolitions ordered by a court of law.
