Three people were tragically killed, and 15 others sustained injuries following a knife attack at a supermarket in Shanghai on Monday, according to state-run Xinhua news agency. This incident extends a disturbing series of stabbing incidents throughout China this year.

The victims were rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention, but three succumbed to their injuries, Xinhua reported on Tuesday. The assailant, identified as a 37-year-old man surnamed Lin, was promptly detained by the police, who received a report of the attack at 9:47 p.m. local time (1447 GMT).

Authorities have noted a rise in public stabbing incidents in China, often attributing them to mental health issues. In September, a 10-year-old Japanese student was fatally stabbed near his school in Shenzhen. The incident, along with a June knife attack on two Japanese nationals in Suzhou, has heightened security concerns among the Japanese community in China. Despite the rarity of such incidents in Shanghai, a stabbing spree at a major hospital in 2022 left 15 injured.
