Rockets Fired Near Baghdad Airport Amid Tensions
Multiple Katyusha rockets were fired near Baghdad International Airport, causing damage to vehicles but no casualties. Initial reports suggested U.S. forces were targeted, but U.S. officials disputed this. The incident underscores ongoing tensions involving Iran and Iran-backed groups.
Early on Tuesday, multiple Katyusha rockets were fired near Baghdad International Airport, according to two Iraqi military officials. However, a U.S. official disputed reports that U.S. military forces were the targets of the incident.
Despite initial claims, all military personnel were accounted for, and military forces were not targeted, a U.S. defense official told Reuters. This incident highlights the soaring tensions in the Middle East, amid speculation about potential retaliation from Iran and Iran-backed groups following recent Israeli actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Two Iraqi security sources reported that three rockets were fired, one of which landed near buildings used by Iraqi counter-terrorism forces, causing vehicle damages but no casualties. Initial reports also suggested some of the rockets targeted a U.S. base, but the U.S. official clarified that the attack was on the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Complex, a Department of State facility. The State Department is assessing the damage.
