At least two Katyusha rockets were launched at a military base housing U.S. forces near Baghdad International Airport early Tuesday, according to two Iraqi military officials. Air defenses successfully intercepted the rockets, preventing casualties.
An initial investigation by two security sources revealed that three rockets were fired in total. One rocket landed near buildings used by Iraqi counter-terrorism forces, causing property damage and starting fires on some vehicles. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
A diplomatic facility belonging to the United States in Baghdad was also attacked on September 11 without resulting in any casualties. A U.S. embassy spokesperson has yet to comment on the incident. Iraq, which hosts 2,500 U.S. troops, has seen repeated attacks by Iran-aligned armed groups targeting U.S. forces in the region since the onset of the Gaza conflict.
