Around 120 people, including climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, were detained by Delhi Police at the city's border while marching to demand sixth schedule status for Ladakh, police sources confirmed.
The detainees were transported to various police stations near the border, except for women in the march. Detentions followed prohibitory orders banning gatherings of five or more in north and central Delhi.
Wangchuk posted visuals on Instagram showing heavy police presence stopping their buses. He noted that as they neared the capital, it became evident they would be detained rather than escorted.
Wangchuk highlighted that around 1,000 police personnel were deployed at the Delhi border and additional forces at Ladakh Bhawan and areas where Ladakh students reside.
The 'Delhi Chalo Padyatra' organized by the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance demands statehood, constitutional protections, recruitment processes, and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil.
Delhi Police recently prohibited gatherings and protests in central and border areas of Delhi for six days, citing law and order issues from various protest calls.
