Ryan Wesley Routh pleaded not guilty on Monday to federal charges, including attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Routh was arrested after authorities found him camped outside Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, armed with a rifle.
According to officials, Routh did not have Trump in his line of sight and was apprehended when Secret Service agents noticed his rifle. He left behind significant items including a loaded SKS-style rifle, a digital camera, and handwritten notes outlining his plans.
Monday's court proceedings were overseen by a magistrate judge, but further hearings will be handled by US District Judge Aileen Cannon. The case also references the previous shooting of Trump at a Pennsylvania rally. Additional charges include illegal gun possession and obliterated serial numbers on the weapon.
