Five Naxalites, including a woman, surrendered before police in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region amid mounting tension, officials confirmed.

The defectors cited disillusionment with the brutal and 'hollow' Naxal ideology and praised the state government's Naxal rehabilitation policy and 'Niyad Nellanar' development scheme, as the motivation behind their surrender.

In a separate incident, two Maoists were apprehended on Sunday evening from a forest between Bardela and Bade Tungali villages in the Bijapur district. Identified as Jogo Madvi (27) and Soni Lal Ursa (22), they were active militia members.

The surrendered cadres were previously engaged in militancy activities including attacking police teams, planting IEDs, and damaging infrastructure.

Key involvement was seen from the District Reserve Guard, CRPF, and the intelligence branch of CoBRA in facilitating these operations.
