The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has demanded explanations from various authorities, including the Union Ministry of Environment, on the alleged attack on a trainee IAS officer in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh by illegal miners.

The green tribunal took suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report that described how illegal miners attempted to run over the officer with a tractor. The trainee IAS officer, serving as the joint magistrate of Sadar tehsil, was leading an anti-encroachment operation against illegal mining activities.

In a bench order on September 27, Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel noted that illegal sand mining is a persistent problem in the Thakurdwara region, often resulting in clashes. When pursued by law enforcement, miners frequently escape to Uttarakhand. The tribunal highlighted the ongoing challenges in curbing these illegal activities and issued notices to several authorities to respond before the next hearing date on January 22.
