In a significant move for Libya's economic future, the eastern-based parliament has approved Naji Mohamed Issa Belqasem as the new governor of the central bank. The decision, made during a televised session, also confirmed Mari Muftah Rahil Barrasi as deputy governor.
The nominations came as part of a recent U.N.-facilitated meeting focused on resolving the country's ongoing crisis, which has severely affected oil output.
Belqasem previously served as the central bank's director of banking and monetary control, evidencing his deep familiarity with the institution's workings.
