Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday told the state police to take steps to increase their conviction rate.

He emphasized that merely arresting criminals is not enough; they need to be convicted in court. Saha urged police officers to consult with lawyers on improving conviction rates, stating that there's no point in arrests if convictions don't follow. He made these remarks after a law and order review meeting with top police officers at police headquarters.

Currently, Tripura police have a conviction rate of 35-40 per cent. The chief minister instructed police officers to reopen all closed cases to ensure justice is delivered, emphasizing that people have been waiting for long. Saha assured that his directives would be implemented stringently, reiterating the state's zero-tolerance policy towards crime and drugs.

Saha pointed out that the state police have seized the highest quantity of drugs among northeastern states. He called for stringent monitoring of NDPS cases to ensure the accused are punished, underlining the government's commitment to combating the drug menace.

Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan reported a significant reduction in crime over the past three years and mentioned plans to enhance border protection with the help of central agencies and border guarding forces.
