A 65-year-old woman who had been evading arrest for 29 years in a dowry harassment case was taken into custody, the police reported on Monday.

The accused, Warisa, was arrested from her residence in Baraut town, adjacent to the district of Baghpat, where she had been hiding for nearly three decades.

Superintendent of Police (City) Satya Narain Prajapat detailed that Warisa, the wife of Raheesu, had been wanted in the case since it was filed in 1995. The charges included multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), such as 498A (dowry harassment), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), along with sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

The case stemmed from allegations of dowry harassment brought against her husband, his brother, and other in-laws concerning her daughter-in-law in Khatauli town. Prajapat revealed that a reward of Rs 10,000 had been declared for any information leading to her arrest.

During the search operations, police located Warisa at her residence in Baraut, resulting in her arrest on Sunday.
