Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma visited R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on Sunday, ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor.
Verma reviewed hospital security, engaged with police personnel, and visited the emergency department. This visit comes amidst ongoing tensions following a mob attack that vandalized the emergency department on August 15, after the Calcutta High Court transferred the case investigation to the CBI.
Junior doctors, having recently resumed work after a prolonged strike, are considering halting work again if their safety concerns are not addressed during the Supreme Court hearing. This decision follows assaults on medical staff at another state-run hospital, showing a repeated failure of the government to ensure their security.
