The Congress has called for the immediate resignation of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman after a case was lodged against her and other officials connected to the now-scrapped electoral bonds scheme. The opposition accuses the BJP of undermining democracy through this scheme.
During a press conference, Congress representatives including Jairam Ramesh and spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi, outlined four methods used to extort money: prepaid bribery, postpaid bribery, post-raid bribery, and through front companies. They also reiterated their demand for a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the scheme.
An FIR has been registered against Sitharaman and BJP officials under various sections of the IPC, following a complaint by Adarsh R Iyer. The complaint alleges that thousands of crores were extorted under the guise of electoral bonds. The Supreme Court had earlier struck down the scheme, citing violations of the right to information and freedom of speech.
