Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma endorsed the 'one nation, one election' initiative on Friday, calling it a step in the right direction. However, he pointed out that significant complications need to be addressed before it can be implemented.
Sangma stated that more consultations with states are necessary to make the concept practical. 'We have already provided our views. From a governance and election perspective, 'one nation, one election' is the right way forward,' said Sangma while attending a National People's Party (NPP) meeting in Guwahati.
'But numerous complications exist. It will require extensive consultations with states to figure out the practical side of achieving 'one nation, one election,'' he added. Sangma mentioned that factors like the remaining terms of some state governments play a crucial role. The Union Cabinet recently approved a high-level committee's recommendation for simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, with coordinated local body polls within 100 days.
