A Moscow court commenced hearings on a criminal case involving a 72-year-old American, Stephen James Hubbard, accused of acting as a mercenary for Ukraine, Russia's RIA news agency reported on Friday.

Hubbard, reportedly detained for six months pre-trial, signed a contract with a Ukrainian territorial defense unit in February 2022, earning $1,000. Captured by Russian forces in April, Hubbard is facing charges that carry a prison sentence of seven to 15 years in Russia. His next court hearing is set for October 3.

The U.S. embassy in Moscow acknowledged Hubbard's detention but offered no further details. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials have yet to comment. Hubbard is among nine Americans currently imprisoned in Russia amidst escalating international tensions.
