Elon Musk's X Negotiates Brazilian Ban Lift Amid Misinformation Battle
Elon Musk's platform, X, has informed Brazil's Supreme Court of its compliance with orders to curb misinformation and sought to overturn a ban. After a five-month standoff, X's conciliatory move could see the service restored soon. The case highlights Musk's ongoing clashes with governments over free speech and misinformation controls.
Elon Musk's social media platform, X, announced it has complied with a Brazilian Supreme Court order to halt the spread of misinformation, requesting the ban on the service be lifted, according to an internal document accessed by Reuters.
The billionaire entrepreneur had resisted the order for over five months, labeling it as 'censorship,' in a significant market for the platform. Brazilians' access to X was severed in late August.
Though the court has yet to decide on restoring service, sources close to Musk indicate that the platform could be back online in days. X emphasized the importance of access to its service for democratic participation, pledging to uphold freedom of expression and respect national sovereignty.
