High-Stakes Diplomacy: Blinken and Wang Yi Meeting in New York
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are scheduled to meet in New York City. The meeting aims to address various bilateral issues, including trade tariffs, export controls, Taiwan, and human rights. The gathering comes amid rising global tensions and a backdrop of significant geopolitical challenges.
On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will engage in a crucial meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New York City, according to the U.S. State Department. The dialogue occurs as the U.S. and China, the world's top two economies, navigate increasing tensions over advanced chip technology export controls, trade tariffs, human rights issues, and conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
The scheduled meeting at 1330 ET (1730 GMT) aligns with Wang Yi's attendance at the United Nations General Assembly session. This week, China has called on the U.S. to remove all additional tariffs on Chinese goods immediately.
The bilateral relationship is strained further by the U.S.'s concern over China's ties with Russia and Beijing's apprehensions regarding U.S. support for Taiwan. Despite the lack of formal diplomatic recognition, the U.S. remains Taiwan's key international ally and military supplier.
Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell noted that the challenges posed by China exceed those experienced during the Cold War. While President Joe Biden's administration has clarified that it does not seek a cold war with China, analysts and U.S. Congress members have observed that the escalating competition between the two nations is beginning to resemble a new form of cold war.
Despite these tensions, communication lines have remained open between the two countries. The White House announced that a call between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping is in the planning stages.
