Biden and Harris Unveil Bold Measures Against 3D Printed Firearms

On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris announced a new executive order aimed at combating the increasingly severe threats posed by 3D-printed and converted firearms. The order, signed by Biden during a White House event, introduces a federal task force to assess the dangers of machine gun conversion devices and other 3D-printed firearms.

Biden highlighted the urgency of this initiative, citing a recent mass shooting in Alabama where a gun conversion device was found at the scene. 'Enough,' Biden said to an audience including survivors of gun violence, emphasizing the need to continue the fight against gun violence. Vice President Harris stressed the severity of gun violence, which she noted kills more children than any other cause in the U.S.

The order also mandates federal agencies to provide guidance for schools on conducting active shooter drills, responding to research showing such drills can be traumatic for students. This is part of a broader strategy to reduce gun violence that both Biden and Harris have actively promoted since taking office. Early data indicates that homicides have decreased by 17% since Harris assumed her role overseeing gun violence prevention in 2023.
