The Allahabad High Court has made a poignant observation about the times we live in, stating, 'It appears Kalyug has arrived,' during a maintenance dispute between an elderly couple. Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamshery made the remark while hearing a criminal revision petition filed by 80-year-old Munesh Kumar Gupta from Aligarh. Gupta had moved the high court challenging an earlier order that directed him to pay Rs 5,000 per month to his wife Gayatri Devi as maintenance.

Gayatri Devi had initially approached a family court seeking financial support, noting that her husband received a monthly pension of Rs 35,000. The family court sided with her and awarded her a maintenance sum of Rs 5,000 per month. Unhappy with this decision, Gupta then sought relief from the Allahabad High Court.

During the proceedings, Justice Shamshery voiced his concern about an elderly couple aged between 75 and 80 fighting a legal battle over maintenance. He expressed hope that a resolution satisfying both parties can be reached and issued a notice to Gayatri Devi for further hearing.
