The Supreme Court has clarified that the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, is a civil code applicable to all women in India, regardless of their religious or social background.

A bench consisting of Justices B V Nagarathna and N Kotiswar Singh confirmed that the Act strengthens the protection of women's rights as guaranteed under the Constitution.

The ruling arose from an appeal challenging a Karnataka High Court order related to maintenance and compensation, affirming the Act's broad and inclusive applicability.
