New Zealand and Australia Navies Sail Through Taiwan Strait
New Zealand and Australia conducted a joint naval passage through the Taiwan Strait, marking the first New Zealand vessel in the strait since 2017. The operation follows international law, according to New Zealand Defence Minister Judith Collins. The activity was also reported to include a Japanese destroyer.

Naval vessels from New Zealand and Australia transited the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, sparking international interest, as announced by New Zealand Defence Minister Judith Collins on Thursday.
The vessels sailed through the contested waterway starting at 2pm local time Wednesday, with Collins stressing that the maneuver was a routine activity in line with international law. 'The New Zealand Defence Force conducts all activities in accordance with international law and best practice,' she stated.
This event marks the first transit of a New Zealand naval ship through the strait since 2017. A Japanese newspaper claimed the fleet included the Japanese Self Defense Force destroyer Sazanami, though Collins' statement cited only New Zealand and Australia. Australia's Department of Defence and the Defence Minister's office have yet to comment.
