Congress Criticizes Modi's Neglect of Marathi Language and Industrial Issues

The Congress party has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring demands for granting Marathi classical language status and failing to address multiple issues, including the exodus of manufacturing units from Pune's Chakan industrial area, the Dhangar community's demand for ST status, and the challenges faced by Maharashtra's sugar industry. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posited several questions to Modi ahead of his Pune visit, which was canceled due to heavy rains.

In a sharp critique, the Congress on Thursday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has neglected the demand for recognizing Marathi as a classical language. This accusation follows a decade-long wait since the submission of a detailed plea by then Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan in 2014.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh raised multiple concerns ahead of Modi's planned but canceled Pune visit, citing the mass relocation of manufacturing units from Pune's Chakan industrial area due to poor infrastructure and lax governance.

Ramesh also highlighted the Dhangar community's prolonged struggle for ST status and criticized the Central government's blanket ban on ethanol production, which he claims has adversely affected Maharashtra's sugar industry.
