The West Bengal unit of the BJP on Wednesday staged a sit-in near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence in South Kolkata, demanding her resignation over the alleged rape and murder incident at RG Kar Hospital.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari criticized the state government for its perceived failure to ensure the safety of women at the workplace, while BJP activists brandished placards seeking justice for the young doctor. Adhikari claimed that crucial evidence in the rape-murder case was destroyed in an attempt to protect the culprits.
The body of a woman post-graduate trainee was found inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. In response, junior doctors had staged a 42-day 'cease work' protest, which partially ended last week. The CBI, now investigating the case, has arrested several individuals, including the hospital's former principal, Sandip Ghosh.
