A local peace militia gunned down two militants after they attacked a police van in Pakistan's restive northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Wednesday. Two policemen were injured in the attack, which took place in Swat district's Asharay village.
The local peace militia, in coordination with the police team, retaliated against the militants' firing, successfully neutralizing two attackers.
Peace militias, supported by police forces, are active in Swat district to counter terrorist activities and prevent Taliban resurgence in the area, which was a Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan stronghold in 2009. At the village level, peace militias are formed to mitigate terrorist threats. Over 4,000 wanted terrorists reportedly returned to Swat from Afghanistan during Imran Khan's tenure. Separately, a police officer's nephew was killed in a militant attack in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, prompting police to launch a combing operation.
