China Intensifies Crackdown: Surveillance and Deportation of North Korean Defectors
China's border police have intensified efforts to identify and expel undocumented migrants, with a focus on North Korean defectors. New deportation centres, advanced surveillance technologies, and enhanced patrols have been implemented. These measures serve Beijing's political interests, providing leverage over North Korea and maintaining border stability.
China's border security measures have intensified, making it increasingly difficult for North Korean defectors to evade capture. Reuters has reviewed over 100 government documents and interviewed a dozen sources, revealing heightened surveillance and expulsion tactics targeting undocumented migrants in China's northeast.
The new strategies include deploying hundreds of smart facial-recognition cameras, establishing additional boat patrols, and monitoring social media accounts of North Koreans in China. Fingerprint, voice, and facial data of defectors are also being collected. According to Stephen Kim, a missionary aiding North Koreans, more than 90% of defectors in China have been registered.
These actions align with Beijing's priorities to manage its relationship with Pyongyang and maintain regional stability. By controlling undocumented North Koreans' fates, China gains potential diplomatic leverage. As part of this massive security upgrade, substantial budgets have been allocated to bolster border police capabilities, processing illegal immigrants, and setting up new deportation stations.
