Ryan Routh, 58, has been indicted on charges of attempted assassination of Donald Trump at his Florida golf course, further intensifying his legal troubles. Federal prosecutors allege Routh pointed a rifle through a fence at Trump's golf club in West Palm Beach on Sept. 15 while the former president was golfing there. This new charge could lead to life in prison.
The U.S. Attorney General, Merrick Garland, condemned the act as 'heinous' and promised the Justice Department would employ all necessary resources to pursue the case. Evidence presented by prosecutors suggests Routh had months-long plans to kill Trump, including a letter hinting at an assassination and cell phone data placing him near Trump-related venues.
A U.S. Secret Service agent foiled the alleged plan when he opened fire after spotting Routh's rifle through the fence, causing Routh to flee. Captured within an hour, Routh was initially charged with firearm possession as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He remains in jail awaiting trial, having been denied bond.
