Qatar Joins U.S. Visa Waiver Program, Strengthening Strategic Partnership
Qatar has become the second Muslim-majority country to join the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, permitting its citizens to travel to the United States without a visa. This decision highlights the strong strategic partnership between Qatar and the U.S., reflecting shared commitments to security and stability. Only eligible Qatari passport holders can benefit from this program.
The Gulf nation of Qatar has become just the second Muslim-majority country admitted into the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, joining on Tuesday. This program allows citizens to travel to the United States without first obtaining a U.S. visa.
The Departments of State and Homeland Security jointly announced Qatar's admission, confirming that the nation met stringent eligibility requirements, including low visa refusal and overstay rates and reciprocal treatment of American travelers.
"Qatar has been an exceptional partner for the United States, and our strategic relationship has only grown stronger over the past few years," stated the departments.
Qatar's inclusion marks its 42nd entry into the program, joining other countries whose citizens benefit from visa-free travel arrangements with the U.S. The only other Muslim-majority country in the program is Brunei.
Despite having a population of over 3 million, only about 320,000 Qataris holding valid passports will be eligible for the program. The rest are foreign workers and expatriates without Qatari citizenship.
The program permits business or tourist travel for up to 90 days, though citizens of qualifying nations still need to obtain online approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).
