A policeman in Mizoram has been suspended after allegedly assaulting three people on a street, according to officials on Tuesday.

The officer, Sailianpuia Sailo, who was stationed at Sairang police station near Aizawl, along with five youths, reportedly attacked two doctors and their friend on the night of September 21. The victims, who were returning home from work, were pulled out of their vehicle and beaten.

The assault left the two doctors with serious injuries and their friend with minor wounds. Following a complaint filed by one of the victims, police launched an investigation and arrested Sailo and his alleged accomplices on Monday. They were released on bail shortly thereafter. The India Medical Association's Mizoram unit has called for a magisterial-level investigation and severe penalties for the accused.
